Yesterday I decided to start a series on my experience and knowledge on mental strength.
- So, what it is like to BE a mentally strong person?
- What are their traits?
- What are their ways of Being?
#1 Flexibility
One of the NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) assumptions is:
“The most flexible element of the system steers/controls the system”
NLP assumption
In communication it simply means that the one who keeps an open mind and is able to take various perspectives is the one who can give the conversation another spin, another drive. The one who is stuck in their opinion will neither move themselves nor the situation.
And it is also true for the SELFTALK and the communication with ourselves. BEing flexible in certain situations means
- to look at the situation from a different angle
- to make different interpretations
- to question the level of truth in the first judgement …
Situations just ARE difficult or uncomfortable because of US FEELING stuck or experiencing the “I must /have to … “ – thing or the feeling of having no choice…
All these feelings have one thing in common:
They originate from thoughts. Maybe unconscious thoughts. Thoughts, we are not even aware of, because they are playing in the background…
So what if we apply the assumption above to our selftalk in these difficult situations? How can we become more flexible?
Just by asking this one simple question: What if it was easy? Just for a moment assuming that it was easy … what would be different then? How would we behave differently? How would we feel differently? ….
… Now there comes flexibility into the system … And guess what: if you are the one to BE flexible – you have the control…. over your feelings and over how you experience and perceive the situation (not about the outcome)!!!! Yeah!!!
