I am quite sure that you have wondered sometimes why making changes in your life feels so damn hard, even when you’re fully committed? I had an eye-opening conversation recently, sparked by feedback from a participant in my latest survey. This feedback shed light on a fundamental struggle we all face: the battle between our conscious desires and the powerful, often hidden influence of our unconscious patterns.
Conscious vs. Unconscious: The Balance of Power
Our conscious thoughts are like the tip of an iceberg, representing only about 5% of our waking life. These are the thoughts we are actively aware of – the decisions we make, the goals we set, and the plans we create. However, the vast majority of our behavior is driven by unconscious thoughts and patterns. These unconscious programs are like the submerged part of the iceberg, deeply embedded and often running on autopilot.
During my conversation with a survey participant, they mentioned a preference for focusing solely on positive and happy thoughts, choosing not to dwell on their unwanted behaviors or disempowering thoughts. Initially, this seemed like a brilliant approach, because this is exactly where we aim at, right? → Replacing negative patterns with positive ones is not a key goal, but THE key goal. However, it also highlighted a critical point: positive thinking (and affirmations) alone might not be enough to overcome deeply ingrained behavioral and thought patterns.
The Challenge of Automation
Consider this: many of our behaviors, much like walking, become automated over time. When you walk, you don’t consciously think about every step – you just do it. This automation is incredibly efficient, saving our brains a lot of energy. However, it also means that changing these ingrained behaviors requires more than just conscious effort.
The brain’s remarkable ability to adapt, known as neuroplasticity, allows us to learn and form new neural connections throughout our lives. This adaptability is both our challenge and our opportunity. To establish new habits and thought patterns, we must consistently engage with new thoughts and behaviors, reinforcing them until they become our new (and really wanted!) autopilot. This process has a quite fancy name: Learning. 😉
Awareness: The Key to Transformation
True transformation involves making the unconscious conscious. Without awareness of our automated programs, they will continue to dictate our lives, leading to perceived limitations and self-fulfilling prophecies. For instance, if you believe you’re not capable of achieving a goal because of past failures, that belief will likely become your reality.
Our brains are prediction machines, constantly seeking to conserve energy and maintain familiarity. This tendency can hinder our efforts to adopt new habits or pursue ambitious goals. Yet, understanding this can empower us to break free from limiting patterns.
The Power of Perception
One fascinating aspect of our brain’s function is how it shapes our perception of reality. Science has shown that we don’t perceive an objective reality; instead, our brains create our subjective experience of the world. This means that by changing our thoughts and perceptions, we have the power to alter our reality.
Imagine catching yourself in a moment of negative thinking. Perhaps you notice a physical sensation, like your stomach tightening or your shoulders tensing. These signals can alert you to an unhelpful thought pattern. By becoming aware of these moments, you can choose to redirect your thoughts toward more positive and empowering ones.

The journey to unlocking your potential begins with awareness:
By observing your thoughts and becoming mindful of the unconscious programs running your life, you can start to make intentional changes.
This process doesn’t require that you relive past traumas or analyzing every detail analytically.
Instead, it involves recognizing the thoughts that shape your reality and choosing which ones to believe and act upon.
Remember, you are the master of your thoughts. By consciously choosing empowering thoughts, you can create the life you truly desire.
